Babies and Toddlers

Development

Consider now the development of an infant covering the period between 12 months and 36 months old. The following analysis will concentrate on the particular stages reached by an average child within this development phase:

Age - 12 to 15 Months

Physical

Can stand upright without any outside help, and without having to hold onto anything for support

Is just about able to drink from a cup, but without the sense of fully controlling the action, such as accompanied by a certain amount of spillage

Can turn the pages of a book, a few at a time

Can get involved in simple games, such as rolling a ball along the ground or possibly even throwing it in no one particular direction

Mental

Can use words involving four to six letters, such as ball and spoons

Can follow a simple instruction when accompanied by an appropriate hand gesture, such as fetching as object when having been pointed to it, and asking the child to collect it

By hiding a toy behind the sofa, the infant knows that it has not gone away

Emotional

Using words or gestures that the child will understand to signify particular objects, such as pointing at a toy and raising the arms to indicate picking up the toy, or alternatively, saying the word cup using an exaggerated movement of the mouth with the intention of receiving the cup from the child

To perform acts that will entertain, such as covering your eyes with your hands, and then removing the hands again, whilst playing the game peek-a-boo
